What Are Acting Headshots?

Acting headshots are unique photographs of actors and actresses. They are very useful for landing acting jobs. Casting directors view these images to determine whether the person will suit a particular role. They examine aspects such as how he or she appears and acts within the photo. The primary function of acting headshots is to highlight the individual’s special face, emotions, and expressions within the photo. A good headshot can distinguish one from others vying for the same position. By the way, there are various headshot types, such as theatrical headshots and commercial headshots. Even though both are acting headshot subcategories, you might want to know there are still differences between theatrical and commercial headshots. Each has its style. Thus, acting headshots benefit people in the acting profession!

Are Acting Headshots Important?

Yes, there was one person at the beach at Xcaret whom I liked immediately.

At times we are able to identify why we feel the way we do, and at others, it remains a secret. Yet it is interesting to know that most people will make their “first impressions” of others in the space of a fraction of one second — 1/8th! They can have great influence in hiring, buying, and even the people we listen to. In acting, particularly for up-and-coming actors, casting agents will base their decisions about whether to invite you to audition for roles on headshots. Thus, making the effort to have high-quality headshots done will help your career spring to life.

What Do I Wear for Acting Headshots?

Your outfit should reflect your personality and desired roles. Dress according to the jock persona if you aspire to play jock. If you want to portray the “rich business man,” wear a suit. Having your intended roles match in headshots heightens the likelihood of casting directors viewing you as a good fit for their vacancies.

For a universal headshot, choose the “fashionably casual” approach – think clean, yet chic clothes. Avoid distracting components such as intricate patterns, logos, and accessories that divert the focus from your face. Keep in mind, you want to catch your essence and leave an indelible mark.

How Do I Pose for Acting Headshots?

You don’t have to go and get all elaborate with poses for headshots. We like to keep it to simple poses in our studio. We’ve seen some other photographers put their clients into absolutely absurd poses, but we avoid all of that like the plague.

In any case, we want to showcase your acting talents—not our photographic skills. At the beginning of your session, it’s best to ease into it with simple and uncomplicated poses. Just stand there and smile.

Throughout our journey, we will work with poses specifically suited to your target roles. Don’t worry, we will bring out the best of you in the most appealing manner possible.

What Backdrops are Best for Acting Headshots?

When it comes to headshots, it’s usually best to steer clear of distracting or colorful backgrounds. I mean, you want all the attention to be on you! Don’t choose backdrops with patterns or gradients.

Acting headshots are normally shot in front of a paper studio back, but outdoor photo shoots are fine as well. Choose muted colours which suit your appearance without drawing the eye away from you. We utilize black, dark grey, or off-white backdrops for the majority of our sessions.

Please view our professional headshot backdrops page to view samples of each of our backdrops. We have colored studio backdrops and plain white available at Zen Studios LA.

How Should I Prepare for Acting Headshots?

Preparation for your headshot in advance entails three simple steps. As you prepare to maximize your session, ensure you get adequate rest, exercise regularly, and allow yourself to get some sunlight. As our editing team will touch up your chosen photographs before delivery, your prep will help to ensure they will appear natural.

Secondly, it is best to wear your intended clothes for at least one or two days prior to the session. This will help you ensure that the clothes still fit you correctly and don’t need emergency dry cleaning.

Finally, spend some time going through some of your old photos and mark any particular ones you like. When you come to the studio, bring these photographs along to share with your photographer. This will help us to pick up on the poses and shots you like best.

How Much Do Acting Headshots Cost?

Varying by provider, package, and geography, the headshots of an actor may range from $225 to and beyond.

When setting the price, you must take into consideration two very important aspects: licensing and retouching fees.

For licensing, it is typically customary for photographers to retain ownership of photos only if they are “purchased” from them. This is different from the “session fee” charged for the time to spend within the photographer’s studio.

There will be additional licensing fees if you want to utilize the photos in a press release, advert, magazine cover, or book cover.

When it comes to retouching, most photographers will charge you anything from $225 to $999 for each photo. It is best to include these costs in your session’s overall cost.

Needless to say, our sessions have no initial cost, and you even have the right to 100% usage rights for all of the images from your session. And there’s still more! As part of our deal, you will get to take away one custom-retouched image of your liking. Thrilling. If you’re looking to save some $$$, we have you covered with our Virtual Headshot offering.
