When it comes to acting headshots, many actors will ask how I prepare for an acting headshot. Here are my headshot tips that will help you stand out.
Research your Acting Headshot Photographer
The best thing to do before you book your headshot photographer is to do your research! Go on Google and look up the local headshot photographer in your area. In LA, plenty of photographers do headshots for actors. However, you want to check out their portfolio and style before you book.
Get in the zone for your headshot session
You need to be in the zone or have the right mindset for your acting headshot. Ensure you leave plenty of time to get to your acting headshot; you want to arrive relaxed and not rushed. It will show in your images if you are stressed because you ran late.
When it comes to positioning and posing, if you need clarification on your poses, then be open to taking the photographer’s direction. Many positions and poses may feel weird and decidedly unnatural, but your headshot photographer will position you in that way to accentuate certain features that make you look your best. Feel free to communicate with your headshot photographer regarding what poses you like and don’t like. If you feel less than 100% comfortable, then let them know. Getting your acting headshots is collaborative; a good headshot photographer will want to hear what you say.
Physically prepare your actor headshots
Physically preparing yourself for your actor headshots is very important. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I can’t stress how important this is enough!
For men, preparing for your acting headshot is relatively simple – have a haircut about a week ahead of your headshot session. Start moisturizing your skin leading up to your headshot session. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Take care of essential grooming by trimming your beard or shaving if you want to. Remember to take care of the small details such as ear/nose hair etc…
There needs to be more preparation for females getting their actor headshots. Stay hydrated and moisturize before your headshot session. It would be best to consider having your hair and makeup done by a professional stylist. Not only will this help you look your best, but it also will serve as an excellent confidence booster before your actor headshots. Take care of the small details; ensure that nails are neat and relatively neutral unless you want to portray a bold character. The hands are usually not featured. However, it is always nice for my clients to get a ¾ shot or full length if requested as a part of their headshot session.
Dress Sharp for your Acting Headshot. Always bring more clothing than you will never actors’ headshot so we can select the best outfit. Make sure you avoid hectic patterns and avoid logos, and you have an acting headshot to show off yourself, so you don’t want to distract from that. Most colors are pleasing, but it is a good idea to consider what colors they may cast on the skin. Solid colors like blues, greens, and purples are generally flattering, along with classic black, white, grey, and more neutral colors.
When looking at your clothes, bring outfits that make you feel confident. This significantly affects how you feel and look in your acting headshots. If you struggle to have confidence in how you dress, it is an excellent time to go shopping, preferably with a stylist or an honest friend.
